Presenting Hugo, Man of a thousand faces!

Visting the museum of Childhood this weekend I found this amazing toy – Hugo. As the museum label reads: “This puppet can be a flexible friend. With all his disguises, Hugo can be whoever you want him to be. Made by Denys Fisher Toys Ltd, 1975″.

String of Babies by Daniel Edwards

Guy Hepner Editions announces the release of Daniel Edwards latest work of art, “String of Babies”. Depicting Octo-mom herself with tentacles, in place of her body, appropriately holding a string of 8 babies, as well as a baby bottle. The rubber collectible shows Octo-Mom embracing the world’s only surviving set of octuplets, which fits into the pattern of Edward’s works which take controversial media topics and present them in the form of art in a playful way. Daniel Edward’s feels that Octo-Mom is deserving in a way of attention she has received from the world, saying “I think the world is in desperate need of a maternal figure who is exclusively devoted to being a mother. There is something almost religious and pure about her in that way.”

“String of Babies” is available for purchase through the Guy Hepner website exclusively. 9 inches tall and 12 inches in diameter, made of flexible polyurethane material. It is an edition of 200, signed and numbered by the artist with publisher’s certificate of authenticity. The first 50 are available for the pre publication figure of $199. After this the piece will be $499.

Murakami at Versailles

A seemingly odd paring – Takashi Murakami and the Versailles Palace, but from the photos here I think it works. Murakami himself sets it up:

“For a Japanese like me, the Château de Versailles is one of the greatest symbols of Western history. It is the emblem of an ambition for elegance, sophistication and art that most of us can only dream of.
Of course, we are aware that the spark that set fire to the powder of the Revolution came directly from the centre of the building.

But, in many respects, everything is transmitted to us as a fantastic tale coming from a very distant kingdom. Just as French people can find it hard to recreate in their minds an accurate image of the Samurai period, the history of this palace has become diminished for us in reality.

So it is probable that the Versailles of my imagination corresponds to an exaggeration and a transformation in my mind so that it has become a kind of completely separate and unreal world. That is what I have tried to depict in this exhibition.

I am the Cheshire cat that welcomes Alice in Wonderland with its diabolic smile, and chatters away as she wanders around the Château.

With a broad smile I invite you all to discover the wonderland of Versailles.”

Chinatsu Ban

Hailing from Takashi Murakami’s stable of artists Chinatsu Ban’s beautifully crafted work features elephants and human figures floating against Japanese washi paper backgrounds or in front of candy-colored stripes. Rendered delicately and with a childlike touch, Ban’s endearing characters are frequently shown wearing underpants or tights, or stranger still, sprouting cactus plants from their heads.
