Shark in a jar

shark in a jarNext time your in New York check out the Evolution store in Soho.

Species: Squalus acanthias
Origin: Atlantic Ocean
There are approximately 375 species of  sharks in the world. Some lay eggs (oviparous) and some give birth live (viviparous) like mammals. Most sharks however are ovoviviparous and give birth in a different way. After hatching from eggs within the mother’s oviduct, they remain inside the female to develop even further, they are then “born again” as live baby sharks.   This Sand Shark is an example of this natural process. It was found inside a shark caught for food by a commercial fisherman.  Specimen preserved in alcohol.

The riddle of Julian Schnabel

Just who is Julian Schnabel?
Painter, film director or interior designer?
Schnabel is a master of ambiguity. His is both lorded for his talents on films like The Diving Bell and The Butterfly as he is for his design of Ian Schrager hotels, to the paintings which have been brought by the majority of the major galleries worldwide.
Collected below are examples of all his art forms. Judge for yourself which is best…

Idealising Herb Ritts

Kate Moss - Herb Ritts

Few were better at idealising the Hollywood glitterati than Herb Ritts. His body of photography produced exclusively in black and white was high production, glamour and aspirational.

Think of Chris Isaak’s – “Wicked Game” music video – which was designed by Ritts and you have his aesthetic in a nutshell.

In the realm of shallow glamour, few were more seductive and accomplished than Ritts.

Philippe Starck – Kalashnikov AK47 Table Gun

Philippe Starck - "Kalashnikov AK47" Table Gun

Philippe Starck - "Kalashnikov AK47" Table Gun

Currently high up my wish list of design is a piece for Philippe Starck’s Gun collection. These are high end works of art and yes that illuminate you in the dark too.

Media pictures of Saddam Hussein’s gold-plated gun, recovered when America and its allies attacked Iraq, inspired the line, which contains floor, desk, and bedside models. The guns are coated in gold leaf to allude to the military-industrial complex, while their black lampshades signify death. Small, smoked crosses line the inner portion of the shades, miniature graveyards that remind users that the next passing could be their own.

To drive home our culpability, Starck chose different guns to represent different nations. The Beretta symbolizes the responsibility of western Europe; the Kalashnikov, the suffering caused by the former USSR; and the M16, the havoc created by the United States.

Body is die cast aluminum with injection-molded polymer overprint and gold-plated finish 18K.
