Species: Squalus acanthias
Origin: Atlantic Ocean
There are approximately 375 species of sharks in the world. Some lay eggs (oviparous) and some give birth live (viviparous) like mammals. Most sharks however are ovoviviparous and give birth in a different way. After hatching from eggs within the mother’s oviduct, they remain inside the female to develop even further, they are then “born again” as live baby sharks. This Sand Shark is an example of this natural process. It was found inside a shark caught for food by a commercial fisherman. Specimen preserved in alcohol.
